Nominations for the 2024 BSA Board of Trustees Elections are now open.
Deadline: 26 March 2024, 17:00
The BSA is seeking three new trustees interested in taking up roles as Publications (x 2) or Membership Services (x 1) trustees.
Trustees focus on four main areas of business – governance, publications, public engagement and membership services (including our annual conference) – and all trustees are expected to be active in one of these areas and prepared to commit to several hours per month where necessary.
The Board is a supportive and collegial community. Trustees work closely with each other and the dedicated staff team to welcome, support and nurture members and the discipline. They are kept up-to-date on all the latest policy developments and changes affecting the discipline (e.g. REF, Open Access). There will be opportunities to contribute to the BSA Annual Conference, study groups, publications strategy, government consultation responses and the policies and strategic direction of the Association. In short, the role of a BSA trustee is a very responsible position within your national subject association; a great opportunity to be an active voice in shaping the future of the discipline and a notable achievement on any sociologist’s CV.
Trustees are expected to attend four Board meetings a year and two Advisory Forum meetings with representatives from each constituency within the BSA. Meetings are usually held on Fridays and most will be virtual, thus requiring limited travel. Additional short meetings to meet and work with Board colleagues and BSA staff should also be expected.
The first Board meeting you will be required to attend is an in-person meeting which will be held at the BSA meeting room in London on Friday, 7 June 2024. All reasonable expenses (including travel and accommodation) are recoverable in accordance with the BSA Expenses Policy.
The Trustees seek to achieve a good balance of people in key positions with respect to equality and diversity and request that members are mindful of this when nominating. The Board is particularly keen to increase the inclusion of minoritised groups amongst the Trustees. Applicants need to be fully paid-up members of the BSA at the time of application and need to be proposed by any other fully paid-up member of the Association.
Nominees should complete the Online Application Form where role descriptions are also available. Forms should be submitted by 26 March 2024.
If elected, you will become a trustee of the Association as well as a company director.
Trustee training is provided but applicants are strongly advised to read the available guidance before applying. The following may be useful:
- The essential trustee: what you need to know, what you need to do
- Running a limited company: your responsibilities
For an informal discussion about Trustee roles and responsibilities, please contact Chris Yuill (Chair of the Board of Trustees), or Jennifer Remnant (Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees).
